"As I Was Dying"
Leica European Publishers Award for Photography 2007.
Besides having his book project printed, the Italian photographer Paolo Pelligrin will receive 10,000 Euro in cash and a LEICA M8 digital rangefinder system camera.
The photo book "As I Was Dying" contains photos from various trouble spots all over the world which the Leica photographer visited in the last few years for his documentary work.
The depressing and frequently dismal black-and-white photographs from Kosovo, Serbia, Palestine, Afghanistan, Guantanamo camp on Cuba, Haiti, Indonesia or Albania show scenes and people in exceptional situations, marked by horror and the consequences of what has happened.
Pellegrin is an exact observer through his camera and captures details that visualize not only the plain terror but also the hidden violence inflicted by man on his fellow beings.
