Aix-en-Provence is the city of art, and a city of light and activity. Aix is also a home of art schools and several universities, including some American, attracting a youthful population that sparks the atmosphere.

An almost identical looking plaza to the famous Parisian squares in the capital city, Place d'Albertas is one of Aix's most romantic spots.

The plaza was built in the 18th century, and the distinctive architecture of the surrounding buildings give Place d'Albertas an almost Commedia del Arte air - indeed, it is not difficult to imagine carriages emerging from the adjoining Rue Espariat, or else court ladies waving from one of the overlooking balconies.

Place d'Albertas hosts the annual Festival of Lyric Arts during summer time, a must-see event.


Fontaine des Bagniers. In 1926 Ambroise Vollard gave the town a bronze medallion made by the sculpter Richard Guino, one of Maillol's students, taken from a drawing by, and under the instructions of Renoir...
